How to get 40GB RAM on the Asus G14 Zephyrus ROG Laptop

I recently purchased the Asus ROG G14 that comes stock with 16GB memory. The motherboard has 8GB of soldered memory and another slot for more memory that has another 8GB replaceable stick. It’s a great laptop with the Ryzen 9 processor packing plenty of juice. I scoured Amazon in search for a suitable memory stick that I can add to my new laptop. The one that came with the laptop is a Micron 8GB PC4–3200 stick. I heard from a tech reviewer that you can only get 24GB of memory from this as a result of only 1 available slot on this laptop. This turned out to be incorrect (as I will discuss later). I was very concerned about looking for memory because compatibility can cause system hangs to occur.

When looking for the replacement memory, here was my criteria:

  • Larger than 16GB
  • Micron Brand
  • CAS 22 (similar latency)
  • DDR4–3200

Why these specs? Because these are the specs of the current memory (except for the capacity). This would make it easier to replace things and ensure it runs smoothly since it uses the stock settings from the previous memory.

After several failing to find it on Amazon, I went on Newegg.com and was shocked to find a 32GB memory by Crucial (which is a Micron brand). Actually, I’ve been a huge fan of Crucial for a while, and I know they make memory that is compatible across many different devices. This was perfect so I made the purchase for about $170.

One thing was still looming in the back of my head: is this going to work? I eagerly awaited the arrival of the memory. When it arrived, I took the old one out and slapped the new one on. I turned on the laptop and it worked! Then I downloaded memtest86 to stress test the laptop. The test ran for over 7 hours of very rigorous testing, over 14 tests, each test running 4 times. After the run, the computer was very warm, but there were no errors! Success.
